Kalakuta Museum Is Now on HomeFairyTech.

HomeFairyTech is excited to welcome Kalakuta Museum to our growing network of hospitality properties in Lagos.

Located in Ikeja, Lagos, Kalakuta Museum offers visitors more than a place to stay. It combines accommodation, culture, music and Nigerian history in one unique destination.

For accommodation agents looking for properties that offer clients something beyond a conventional hotel experience, Kalakuta Museum brings a story that is deeply connected to Lagos and Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

A Place Where Nigerian History Lives

Kalakuta Museum is closely connected to the story of Fela Kuti, the pioneer of Afrobeat and one of Nigeria’s most influential cultural figures.

The name Kalakuta Republic came from Fela’s time in prison in 1974, when inmates jokingly referred to their communal cell as “Kalakuta Republic.” Fela later adopted the name for his communal home, which became a space for his family, band members and creative community.

The original Kalakuta Republic in Surulere was destroyed in a military attack in 1977. Fela later rebuilt his home in Ikeja, where the present-day museum stands.

That history gives the museum a significance that goes beyond its exhibits. Visitors are stepping into a space directly connected to one of the most important chapters in Nigeria’s musical and cultural history.

More Than a Museum

Inside Kalakuta Museum, visitors can explore personal belongings, photographs, musical instruments, stage costumes, records and other artefacts connected to Fela’s life and career. The museum also documents the social and political ideas that shaped his music and activism.

Fela’s influence extended far beyond music. His Afrobeat became a vehicle for social commentary, challenging military rule, corruption and injustice in Nigeria. His home, the Kalakuta Republic, became closely associated with that spirit of artistic expression and resistance.

The museum was officially opened in 2012, helping preserve the site as an important part of Lagos’ cultural heritage.

Today, it offers visitors an opportunity to experience that legacy through the very space where much of Fela’s story unfolded.

Bringing Heritage Into the Hospitality Network

For HomeFairyTech, having Kalakuta Museum on the platform represents more than expanding our property network.

It reflects the variety of experiences that make Lagos a destination; from hotels and shortlets to culturally significant spaces that tell the story of Nigeria.

By connecting hospitality businesses with verified accommodation agents, HomeFairyTech makes it easier for agents to discover properties and experiences they can recommend to their clients.

And with Kalakuta Museum now on HomeFairyTech, agents have another unique destination to discover and include in their accommodation and travel recommendations.
